Total Scan Times - What Are Your Average Times?

Hello fellow matterporters!

I was curious. I heard in a matterport webinar that the average scan time was around 1 hour for 2,000 square feet.

It seems like on the scans that I've done, I've improved my scan time quite a bit and most of the time I have to wait for the capture app to catch up to me before I can start scanning the next scan point. Even then, I find my total scan times to be closer to 2 hours for spaces not much larger than 2,000 square feet. (NOTE: This is with the original, slower camera speed. Haven't gotten the fast capture beta yet)

So I'm curious. What are your average scan times? Does the statistic I found seem off, or am I crazy?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

  • Hi Adrian,

The time to scan really varies and depends on the type of space. I find that the more furniture or "stuff" in a space, the more time it takes to move around it and capture a space well. It also depends on the scan density. If you are dropping the camera every 8 feet (then you should be able to technically capture in 1 hour). I think I've heard most people talk about capturing 2000 sq feet in 1 to 1.5 hours.

  • For me it seems closer to 1hr / 1000sqft.  after doing several I have gotten to just under this number but it seems fairly consistent. Would love to knock out 2k in an hour..

  • I recently spent almost 7 hours in a 6,000 square foot luxury home that had plenty of furniture in it. I've found, in fact, that it takes me less time to scan in a place with furniture, because areas with furniture are areas where I would usually have to place the camera to align scans correctly otherwise. An empty space about that same size might take me 30-60 minutes longer.

  • With the new speedy upgrades I average about one scan per minute. A typical home (2-3k sq.ft.) takes me about 90-120 minutes, depending on all of the factors (light, furniture, layout, etc.)

I think 1,000-1,500 sq.ft per hour is a good baseline, but it really depends on the space. Hope that helps!
