Large scan!

OK Guys,

im quoting for a large scan at a shopping mall, it has 4 floors but is an atrium with a central area of nothingness!

my only worry is the amount of scans its going to take, certainly more than 50 per floor. should i really worry about the recommended 200 max?

i have the pro2 so file sizes are going to be bigger.

  • Hi James, Here is one I did a few months ago (still got to reduce some camera positions) and it was a bit of an experiment. What can I say..... I have a Pro1 and used over 500 scans for this small shopping centre. I'm worried about the reliability with certain devices opening it.  I had some alignment issues at first so spent ages rescanning (make sure you cover the malls with more than one path done in blocks) As it could only be done at night it took me 3 sessions. Take plenty of food and drink and it gets very boring with something this large as you don't feel like you're getting anywhere. Also think that if they want you to return to rescan certain areas (new shops etc) that you're going to have to re-edit everything in Workshop (a pain). • im impressed with it!

Im hoping to do it with everything open though! on their quietest day.

Want to show the place alive.

will be using their staff to guide people into the background.

  • Thanks James,

It would have been a lot easier and looked better if it was open but not sure where we stand on the public showing up on the scans. (and we currently can't blur faces out) and it was impossible to get the shops to stay open while I scanned.

Maybe I'm overreacting as they put videos with the public on but we can never be too careful nowadays.

Does anyone else within the UK know where we stand legally on this?

  • @James

What iPad do you use? That is more of an issue than uploading. You start getting into several hundred and the processing is going to be slow.

Fyi I am talking to someone about a scan that is 75,000sqft and stories. I am thinking I will have upwards of 800-1000 scans.

I heard one the other day that was over 600 scans.

I saw @sitimms when he started it and I thought it was great!

Don't be afraid of big scans!

  • James, I have an iPad Pro 12.9 (gen 1) Had no issues whatsoever with capturing (just those alignment errors on the first day) ran like a dream but make sure you turn the brightness down (schoolboy error) and as @justinv will tell you duplicate duplicate duplicate.

@Justinv On a similar note - have you just seen the Matterport news regarding the Leica 360 and Pro1 or 2 intergration for large spaces. This would have made been ideal but not very affordable (At this rate I'd have to work for 30years just to purchase the scanner) but I can dream:) Anyway I'm hopefully out for some real-estate work on Friday (finally) and I've heard its quite a large one.

  • @sitimms

I was not going to mention I helped through email!

Yes I saw that news. That is great they are going to work with other cameras. The price is out of my range. I would pay that much for a camera but it would need to do video at about 6k!
