Can you set the VR start location?

So my standard operating procedure is to start scanning in the basement of a home and work my way up. I can set the start location for the "standard" view but the VR always starts at scan #1 which, in my case, is in the basement! I don't see a way to set the start location for the VR tour. Am I missing something? I use iOS if it makes a difference. Thanks!

  • Thank you for your answer Jamie. I noted that VR starts at scan#1 so my standard procedure is to do scan#1 in front of the main door. I scan the main floor and then go up and leave the basement at the end. This is the only way I found that the VR tour starts in a good location.

  • Follow up question: If you start at the main door, do you create the floors first? i.e. a three floor home, main door is on floor 2, you create all three floors in the capture app before your first scan on floor 2? Any problems aligning with floor 1 and 3 with this method?

  • I just start in the main floor as floor 1, then I scan following a path that leaves me the stairs at the end (when possible). Then I make the stairs with the "4 steps up each time" and in the first scan on the upper level I then create floor 2. Complete floor 2 and then go down to the stairs of the basement. I make a scan near the stairs that go down to the basement on floor 1 and then continue making my way downstairs again with the "4 steps at a time" technique. Then before doing the first scan in the basement floor I create floor 3, and continue my scanning of the floor 3 until completion. I've done most of my models with this process and the alignment problems are minimum.

  • Hello @Jamie

Normally the VR space will start at the same point as the regular 3D Showcase tour. That said, there are a few exceptions to this:

Currently 360 Views are not supported by VR. If your tour starts with a 360 View, then the VR app will default to the lowest numbered active scan point in VR. Meaning if scan point 1 is active in VR it will start there... If scan point 1 is off in VR, it will instead use scan point 2. If scan point 2 is off in VR it will use scan point 3 and so on.

Likewise, Dollhouse View is also not yet supported in VR. If your web tour starts in Dollhouse, then the VR app will again default to the lowest numbered active VR scan.

If you are unsure about what points are on or off in VR, you can always preview and edit them in Workshop. More information on that can be found in our Help Center here: https://support.matterport.com/hc/en-us/articles/226583628-Edit-your-VR-Space-in-Workshop-Video-

    I hope this information helps.

    Best,

    Keith S.

  • That explains it! I always have the exterior 360 shots first in the highlight reel so when a viewer watches a guided tour, they end up inside. I'll adjust my tours accordingly so the 360 are in the "middle" of the tour. Thank you!

  • I just wanted to clarify. I believe as long as the start location is set to an inside view, the guided tour can start with a 360° View. You're not obligated to have your start location be the first Highlight in the reel.

  • Update: So I can get it to work... But... I like to have the thumbnail image on my models be a exterior 360. Even with the "start location" and first "Highlight reel" location set to the same interior 3D scan, it starts at the lowest active scan. Maybe this is a "set thumbnail image" issue? Does the "tour" include the thumbnail image?

  • I just tried it, and setting the start location to an inside view and moving it to the beginning of the highlight reel (before the dollhouse and outside 360s) does not make the VR start in that initial location, unfortunately, btw.

Would be very helpful if Matterport simply made it possible to select the VR start location, as well.
