How to select "opening photo" - Thumbnail option is gone!

I had finally gotten a handle on this: thumbnail = static photo/opening photo (I want the dollhouse view) and starting point = where the walk-thru starts. Now Thumbnail is gone. Please help!

  • Open up Workshop, and click the Assets tab on the left of the Workshop window. Click the arrow next to Snapshots to exand your snapshots. Find your snapshot, and click it once. On the right side of the Workshop window, you'll see a Set Start Location button. Click the button to set the start location for that snapshot.

If the snapshot you want isn't there, then you may have inadvertently deleted it.

Note that if you make a change to the model in the Capture app, and reupload the model, your new model won't have any snapshots, Mattertags, measurments, labels, highlight reel, etc. Reuploading creates a new, unedited copy of the model. Your original model remains in the cloud, and you can refer to it to rebuild your edits.

  • Hi @katekratochvil,

It sounds like you want the thumbnail and start location to be two different Snapshots. This is something that used to be possible, but unfortunately is no longer. While it was a cool feature, it was not intentional. This "feature" was inadvertently created and recently fixed. Now the behavior, of what once was the thumbnail button, is back to the way in was initially designed. It's a quick way to change the start location and not just the thumbnail.

Please let me know if you want some way to distinguish between which Snapshot is the thumbnail and which is the start location. I feel like that "feature" was appreciated, but it would be nice if we could gauge just how much :)

    Thanks

  • It absolutely is important to me, and I would image most everyone! The dollhouse view being the Hero Shot is a huge attention-grabber! It says "This is a Matterport tour!!" Just a dull interior photo of a foyer is NOT. Please, please, please fix this back.

  • @Matterport-Amir From a purely logcial standpoint, having a thumbnail different from a start location doesn't make sense. Why show one view of a property, then when it launches, move to another to start a tour or allow a manual walkthrough?

Think about it from a marketing perspective - would a specific highlight of the property draw a potential viewer in (a nice view, a fabulous kitchen, a luxurious bath, etc.)? Now, would you want to start the tour there? What if you want to wow them with the doll house to highlight that no, "this in in fact NOT just another photo slideshow". I would never lead with the doll house, though. It's too busy to grab someone's attention in a world oversaturated with information. It's a perfect counterpuch once you have them engaged though.

Please pass on that this feature can be useful - maybe not in every instance, but it does have its place.

  • I have found that a snapshot from a matterport tour to be dull looking, especially when it is used as the hero shot. Agents post these things to FB, and it will just look like every other sub-par photo floating around out there. Now I have to choose: Use dollhouse as hero shot and the starting point is a crapshoot OR choose the entry way as the starting point, and have a crappy looking picture showing up everywhere. Sorry I sound bitchy, it's just that I was finally feeling like Matterport had worked out most of the kinks I've been struggling with over the last 10 months that I have had it ("YELLOW"!! just about did me in. I still have clients that shy away from it, even though it is SO much better now) It's annoying when something good goes away.

  • The joys of cloud services. The cloud provider can add, change, or remove features at will.

  • I would like to have the OPTION to do this. All my models used a snapshot of a 360 from the exterior of the property until now as the hero image.

  • I agree with everything said and think it would be great to be able to have one "hero" shot and a different start location for all the reasons you've mentioned. The problem was not the ability, but the implementation. I'll do my best to advocate the importance of this feature so it's properly built in a way that makes more sense. Previously, many users thought they were changing the start location and when it didn't change, they would contact support. Most likely, the Set Start Location buttons should do just that and for setting a different thumbnail there should be a different way to set that.

Any thoughts or suggests as to where/how a thumbnail should be selected are always appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Amir

  • Hi everyone.

I just added this feature request to have a way of designating one Snapshot as the official thumbnail for the Space and another as the Start Location.

Please take a minute and vote here by liking the suggestion.

Thanks so much for your time.

  • To one client the 'front page' needs to be different to the 'cover'. So, very Important as indicated.

  • So, I figured out how to have the background of the opening shot be what I want. It is the fist "snapshot" that is NOT being used in the highlight real. So take the "hero shot" snapshot FIRST, then do the rest. As long as it is in the UNUSED images of the highlight real, and is first in line, it will be the hero shot. Hope this helps!!!

  • I would like the thumbnail (what people see on FB or website) to be different than the start location as well. Most of my tours will start at the front door but because this is, in most cases, looking down a hallway or narrow space, it doesn't make the best thumbnail.

  • maybe by just having the "hero" shot be the shot that is the thumbnail then still be able to select a start location as is now to define the starting point of the tour.

  • I've proposed this approach and hope to see it happen. It's very hard to say at this time when/where in the production pipeline this feature will fall. I know it would be great to have this control and I'll do my best to advocate for it :)

  • absolutely needed... and missed for the use-case people are saying here.  need the thumbnail to the be 'hero shot' (or money-shot we call it) of the pool and sunset etc... need the starting position to be the front door which isn't nearly as eye catching.

hard to understand why matterport took this away and why they are seemingly defensive about why anyone would need it...  (typical tech geniuses ;-)

  • and also, the link given above takes me to the support homepage, not someplace i can vote.  searched and couldn't find this to vote on.  do we up-vote this post?

  • Totally agree with you Barry, it is nonsense that hero image and start location are now the same, they definitely should be two separated features!

I have RVs: I used a 360° view for the hero image and a 3D scan of the inside for the start location. So now it cannot work anymore...

I hope the Matterport team will change that asap, my customers are angry because of this!

  • Had the same request from a client to change the thumbnail image. Even if I delete the start location image it still defaults to the original start location image. Frustrating and embarrassing. Please fix this.

  • Hi wtftv, to solve the problem, we used WP3D Models.
    Hope it can help!

  • Hey Gary,

I have wp3d models and it doesn’t solve the problem. The default thumbnail still stays there when you post on Facebook.

  • All you have to do with wp3d is to publish the tour, then go back, switch out the thumbnail on the lower right, click to redo the social media image, and republish. Problem solved :)

  • I did that. However the initial “unwanted” thumbnail image still appears on the FB post until you click on it. Must be some sort of Matterport thing overriding the override.
