Matterport Partners with Leica Geosystems to Integrate the Leica BLK360 into Matterport’s End-to-End 3D Reality Capture Platform

We are pleased to announce a partnership between Matterport and Leica Geosystems. Matterport’s end-to-end 3D reality capture and distribution platform will expand in 2018 to integrate with the Leica BLK360 imaging laser scanner (currently priced at approx $16k). The solution is expected to offer an easy, flexible, and automated way of capturing detailed images and dimensional data in order to create immersive 3D visualisations. This advancement is currently still in development and will be available sometime in 2018.

This means that Matterport customers, particularly those in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries, who have both a Matterport Pro or Pro2 3D Camera and a Leica BLK360 will be able to use both devices to create a single 3D model. Together, the system will allow customers to collect data on larger spaces and outdoor areas by retaining the level of detail that Matterport’s camera provides and simultaneously leveraging the larger scan area of the Leica BLK 360’s imaging laser scanner. The samples below exemplify the power of this combined solution.

The first Space demonstrates Matterport’s strength in capturing tight spaces in detail. The second Space combines this detail with BLK360 scans that capture detail at large distances.

  • While it's quite impressive to do scans of this scale, I know that my clients would NOT be OK with the amount of artifacts created. If I'm to do a project of this scale, I would have to charge accordingly. If client is paying this amount, they expect a visually pleasing final product. While I know what amount of amazing processing and computing it takes to get something like this put together, that's not what client will see. They will see a disastrous looking display of their space with holes and jagged edges and fragments and mess. I know because in my experience, any client beyond realtors have commented on the messiness of the dollhouse. I really hope that when this integration between Matterport and Leica is implemented, Matterport implement some more advanced trim and fill tools, OR allow for easy export into 3rd party 3D software for modification, then re-import.
