How Do I Do Exterior Tours?

Hello all,

I'd like to ask how does one go about creating exterior tours like the one linked bellow:

In my experience I've only taken interior scans. How does one go about creating an exterior scan  using a Matterport camera? Thanks!

  • Look at the shadows, this is not a Matterport.
Looks like a standard Google Street View tour to me

  • When I right click on the tour - I see this is how it was made:  http://www.3dvista.com/en/products/virtualtour  It appears to me that they also use Matterport (http://www.walkintour.com/services/3d-walkintour) .. I'm not familiar with 3dvista but it creates a nice flow for exteriors... Anyone know about this software?

I've downloaded the trial software it's really cool.  I use Kolor Panotour but this is really nice!  http://www.3dvista.com/en/support/tutorials

Looks like you may have to pay for hosting and the software.. still watching the video.

  • Update from the company: (3dvista.com)

    Dear Lisa,

Yes, you can connect our tours with any external content, Matterport tours included, via buttons or hotspots.

You have to pay once for the software and then if you want you can contract the hosting service which is 99€ per year (basic plan). You can always skip this service and host the tours in your own server.

  • I do like how you can put your logo on the nadir but on my phone it is very SLOW! My phone sucks but it isn't that bad.

This is the problem hosting your own tours. People get mad about not being able to host their Matterport tours but I would think this is the exact reason. The speed would vary from person to person and devalue the product.

I tried several times to move and only moved three times. The average person is going to try and give up.

I am with @james, it looks like 360's. I only saw outside and gave up before I found the inside.

@lisa hinson was interested and said it looked nice, so I will try again this afternoon from my laptop!

  • Those guys haven't done anything particularly clever and as mentioned above a few of those aren't Matterport.

To shoot with Matterport outside you just need the right lighting and outdoor areas are possible, lots of shade and/or shoot at sunrise/sunset.

Here's one I shot totally outside at sunset, I've done others and you just need to be quick and work around any issues.

  • Thanks.@Lisa Hanson.

Not Mexico. Pemba Island, North of Zanzibar off the Tanzanian coast in the Indian Ocean :)

  • When you create a Matterport model, it must have at least one 3D scan.  If you wish, the remainder may be only 360's (which don't have 3D data associated with them), a combination of 3D scans (which have 3D data and 360 degree photography), or only 3D scans.

You can take 3D scans or 360s inside.  You can take 3D scans and 360s outside.  Outdoor 3D scans require specific lighting conditions with low levels of infrared light from the sun so the 3D scanner is not overloaded.

Since Matterport 360s are not spatially referenced (no 3D information), you will need to export the 360s from Matterport and manipulate them in another way to replicate the tour you referenced.  Since you can do 3D scans outside with Matterport, you may not need to go to these extra effort depending on your needs and your artistic sensibility as it relates to the lower light conditions of the photography.

Here's a link to a model I created that has interior 3D scans, exterior 3D scans, and exterior 360s.
