Car interior

Has anyone ever tried to scan the interior of a car? And what were your results like?

  • I have not tried it myself, but have seen many scans of cars and it certainly poses a few challenges.  The most difficult aspect is the interior since you can't really have the camera anywhere inside the car where it's more than 2ft from everything.  When the camera is, for example, in the driver's seat, the steering wheel will have a stitch line across it as will as the seat and body where the roof connects to the lower part of the door/hood corner area.

Anytime a surface is closer than about 2ft to the camera, it can't be seen and if it can't be seen, no 3D mesh is built.  That line where no mesh becomes mesh, you'll most likely see a stitch in the pano, especially when the distance is close up such as in this case or door jambs, for example.

    I hope that helps.

  • This is the most interesting one I ever see.  [Toyota Booth at GIIAS 2016 - Matterport](https://matterport.com/3d-space/toyota-booth-giias-2016/)

But it needs lots of skills to do so. And it is not the recommend Matterport way. :-)

Not sure if this is what you are looking for?  This is one we just tried the other day (we are still learning!)  As Amir said it is not perfect (stitch lines, staging etc) and we likely should have gone a little later in the day but the time worked for the dealership and they still liked the results.  :-)

  • @atait That looks quite good to be honest.

You'll never get the interior to work 100% with a device such as a Matterport, you need to use conventional methods, with a DSLR or VR Camera set up but I guess placing the camera carefully initially to help avoid stitches crossing the main areas of interest is the way to go.

  • This is another example of car interiors. Has anyone come up with a solution as to camera set-up for car interiors? I have tried a couple of set-ups but they are all too bulky. Any help would be much appreciated. Editing the specific scans in Photoshop would also be helpful.

Here is the link I referenced... https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=mE8ytCZdR9d&utm_source=hit-content&play=1&utm_source=4

Thanks in advance for your comments.

  • @geob44 My husband built a small platform on which we could place the trip and covered it with a dark grey cloth so it didn't stand out.  Just large enough to help keep it level.  Hope that helps.
