Matterport Point Cloud: Orthomosaics

There is a great deal users can accomplish with point clouds. In this quick example, ToPa 3D extracted orthomosaic (non-perspective and scaled) imagery from the Matterport point clouds using FARO Scene. Orthomosaics are a great way to have a rapid visualization of a wall elevation or other lengthy surface such as the tunnel system in the example below. These mosaic images have no perspective and are like having a scaled, perpendicular photo from any vantage point along the wall. Orthomosaics are useful because they are:

  1. To scale
  2. A raster image and therefore a light weight data type (as opposed to the more robust point cloud data).
