Fire whoever came up with the new Terms / Help Footer

From the last newsletter:

"For a cleaner 3D Showcase interface, we have moved the Terms of Use and Help links to a new footer. Now, your viewers can find all the information they need about exploring your places without interrupting their 3D experience."

--

The new interface is neither cleaner or helpful to viewers. That big black bar is hideous and our customers will be very unhappy.

You had the design absolutely perfect before. The help button was easy to find and the terms of service was accessible.

Big black transparent bars are a web development concept that was popular a few years ago and like the drop shadow, it is looked down on as BAD design and clutter. Furthermore, UX developers should all be aware that the recommendation for hit targets (buttons) on web are 44px in height. This is 19px.

You also failed to mention in the newsletter that tours embedded with the '&qs=1' option are subjected to an animated Matterport Logo that appears, shrinks and fades. This is also tacky and poorly done.

Lastly, I am very worried that your changes will violate MLS guidelines.

Epic Fail Matterport

  • Here's a useful link that explains why the previous terms / help icons were good design.

New Terms links are 19px tall - recommendation for buttons on web are 44px in height. There's also no padding in the footer - so it looks like a cramped little bar that was tacked on as an afterthought.

  • Hey there @Chris Hickman -- ouch. But thanks for the feedback! I'll send this to the team here.

  • Hi @chris hickman I am no design expert or web developer and I can absolutely see your point. I have looked at a few models and I noticed a couple of things. The instructions now are a little clearer to drag around the model. This is a good step as I do find some people do not realise the model is interactive. The terms of service.... I do not think it diminishes the experience at all. I am hoping that perhaps this is a step towards allowing us to insert a clients logo in the matterport space in the top right hand corner where these icons used to sit as was suggested/requested in the forum quite some time ago. I would be happy to have the new format if it means we will get the opportunity to brand the spaces.

I read your posts with a high level of interest as you are way beyond my skill level and I guess we can only hope that perhaps this first move is part of a sequence to implement a feature many people have been asking for for quite some time. The challenge is how do we get everything we would like to see without it becoming cluttered and ugly. There are some excellent suggestions that come through on different forums but how do you decide what to put in and not to put in as if we all got our wish lists I think the experience would become far messier than it is today.

  • Hi Matterport, can you please reconsider this new bar along the bottom of the tours.

    1. It looks ugly.
    2. Blatant advertising which I suspect will have a negative effect on some potential clients.
    3. It also makes the tour look cheap.
    4. Feels like it just takes up space on the viewable area of the tour.

Also now that you've shown that Matterport is able to place logos in the tours successfully, can you please allow MSP's to include client logos in our tours.

P.S I like the wider field of view, nice work on that one :)

  • I like the idea of clearing the top right for a brand icon.

The bottom area looks too cluttered now... Too much going on, especially with a highlight reel.

Matterport might do a Google Search for 'YouTube'. They put some market research into having their brand identity watermarked on videos on their service. I think they figured out some great ideas!

  • David, If you meant what you said about being ''way beyond" Chris Hickans Skill level, then I suggest that you dont contradict regarding the terms of Service. It just looks like a permanent Branded Matterport Logo and Text constantly in your face. I for one am totaly Pi$$&D at them for blantantly putting there name and logo in OUR CLIENTS faces.

  • Hate it, Hate it Hate it......... Did I say I hate it? What next? Saying that we have to put "A Matterport Tour Provider" at the end of our company name if we want to sell YOUR tours???

  • @colinforte I'm a bit confused. David did post a mouthful, but I enjoyed his thoughts on Matterport clearing a spot for adding our own branding. Whether or not that was their intention, I think that it's nice for someone to post how they've seen a silver lining.

@DavidMcKean - I have to say, anything I've done that would be deemed clever pales in comparison to what the Matterport Team have done. I'm looking for threads to pull in an amazing <canvas>. There are people in the Pokemon Go! community that put me to absolute shame when it comes to reverse engineering :)

  • Hi Chris (Colin AKA Hometakes on the other forum),

I didnt mean to sound like I was attacking David, yes, Kudos for his thoughts on the now clear spot to add something else. My point was when he said "The terms of service.... I do not think it diminishes the experience at all." it had nothing to do with 'experiencing' the actual tour, so of course it wouldn't diminish the actual experience. However, what it does diminish is the look and design as you quite rightly pointed out. This is what I was referring to when I said contradicting you. He praised you for your expertise and opinion, then comments that he sees nothing wrong... I must be missing something or maybe I being am overprotective of you..... Or even where the 'more' drop down is on the top left under address. I would not mind their logo and terms being there as at least its not staring at you in your face continuoulsly.

  • Hey Colin!!!!

I totally agree with you. I was confused about what my perceived skill level had to do with anything - but loved the silver lining that David was thinking of :)

  • I have to agree this is tinkering around the edges and I have to agree the banner is a bit of an eyesore especially on lightly coloured environments, such as tiled floors.

I've always objected to the idea of a business that has sold me a product or service then using my output or marketing to sell their product.

The first thing I always remove from a new car is the dealer sticker or banner the same goes for software that you've bought requiring you to buy a second licence to remove the branding they add to your output, and I'm not talking trial software either.

Matterport should be content that we have invested money in their product and service and shouldn't be constantly trying to sell their equipment to OUR clients.

This attitude has me wondering if I've made a mistake buying into this ecosystem.

PS I keep seeing the mention of the newsletter but I've never received one and can't see where I'd sign up. Can anyone assist on that one @MP-Scott ?

  • With the thousands of users that you are 100 % depending on supporting the brand, why don´t you start checking in how they would react on major changes before deployment ?

I absolutely hate the new footer bar.

  • Matter port: Are you listening??? Or are both fingers in your ears while you repeat "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA". Hey everyone, I think our comments most likely are falling on dead ears. Lets see if Scott the moderator gives us a response as to what the team told him to tell us. Anything less than, sorry guys we will revert it back, will be interesting to hear.....

  • Not mentioned in the newsletter, but if you embed a tour with &qs=1, an animated Matterport Logo appears. It appears, then sort of shrinks and fades. This is beyond tacky because there are two Matterport logos visible at the same time in that instance.

Is Matterport confident that this will be MLS friendly?

  • The new Terms and conditions bar along with the Matterport self promoting logo needs to be removed.

The model is my space. I created it. I should have a say on who decides where the terms and conditions appear Its effectivly a banner advert on my clients work. You have defaced work and reduced the real estate of my models without asking either my clients or my permission. I seriously hope this is an error and not a permanant fixture. Please make this known to the development team. I'm seriously annoyed at the assumption that Matterport should think I or anyone else would be ok with this !! I would like to register my disapproval and put in an official request to have it removed as soon as possible.

  • Dear Dev/Product Team,

    Yikes....just seeing this...

Yes, it is blatant advertising and branding for Matterport, which users already get when they launch the tour, so it is not needed as a bar at the bottom of the tour. Please do keep the terms somewhere on the page, and accessible (I also make sure to email a link to any of my clients who book with me), as I think that part is really important, but please don't have the logo and name distracting from the visuals at the bottom. From a purely aesthetic view, it does not bode well, and I can imagine many of my clients going with an unbranded 360° tour in lieu of using Matterport if they can't turn this off. You may think that aesthetics don't play a huge role, but indeed they do, and if a client is going to have a tour as an integral part of their website, I am sure that they want to control whose brand is on their content.

i.e. Google has their name in tiny font at the bottom of business view/street view, but hosting is free....we and the clients are paying for this hosting. Please rethink this....

  • @joshroberts, @hopscotchinteractive, @Jon, @colinforte, @David Hothersall, @Robin Lycka, @airbornejon (and anyone I may have missed) -- First, thank you for the comments. I'm sorry for the headaches and frustration. Especially when it's bad news, it's important to know what our users feel.

Second, there are a lot of Matterport eyes on this particular thread, and it's generating several discussions about these concerns, and ways we can be better. I'm sorry that we don't have an update to share, but please do keep the thoughts coming.

  • Hi Scott,
Thank you for the reply, I have no doubt this thread and this one We Get Around will be a cause for discussion at MP.

With both of these threads in mind I would like to suggest Matterport looks at formulating a new process for rolling out ideas that are going to impact it's client base?

Perhaps an email communication that demos a potential change before it goes live, from here the community as a whole can provide some constructive thoughts on it's direction. This could prevent the backlash and complete disappointment that's being demonstrated on this and others threads. At the very least Matterport should look at speaking to key members in the MSP community like @Chris Hickman for his thoughts as he appears to have a solid understanding from both the tech side and the MSP side.

Obviously it's Matterports choice to decide if they wish to take a step like this, but it's also an MSP's choice to decide if they will stay with Matterport when another alternative comes along. While Matterport is the main supplier at this point in time we all know it will have stiff competition at some point soon, so it may wish to take a more active role listening and acting on what it's customers think and say.

    All the best,
    Chris

  • Screen space is premium on mobile phones, and Im using a Blackberry Passport (Yes I know... :-) ) to show some clients how its viewable on a mobile phone, as well as my iPad and desktop. Now you loose out on another lot of pixels...

  • I too have had quite a few negative comments from clients about this.

I have also lost a job because they felt it was doing an advertising plug for myself! Not realising that I had nothing to do with this!

    Not happy.

  • I would love a rational explanation from Matterport on why there change was necessary. The original announcement alluded to this change helping people to find the help text.

If this was a courtesy, then allow us to opt out with a parameter. If this was necessary for licensing, investment, etc, reach out to us at our level and let us know what's up.

The positive spin from Matterport on situations like this is a bit too much of a stretch.
