Scanning residences for insurance purposes question

Hello,

We'd like to be able to offer "insurance scans" to homeowners as well as to rental property owners.

These insurance scans "could" also be used for marketing purposes of course but the main reason for them is to serve as a convenient and accurate way to document the state of the property at a specific point in time.

If the building burns down or a renter causes damage to the home then it will be very easy for the owner to prove to the insurance company the value of the property before the damage occurred.

That said, these insurance models do not need to be continuously hosted online and using up valuable spaces since no one is likely to look at them for a extended periods of time.

Keeping the raw scans on the iPad (and backing them up to the cloud) is an option but will incur additional processing fees in the future if/when the client needs to look at them again.

When the client does want to look at them again then the MSP may also need to free up space on their iPad in order to load older models.

Even if the MSP has a 256 GB version of the iPad they can still run into space problems eventually.

It would be far more convenient and preferable to be able to simply toggle an option to "archive" any models that are stored in the Matterport cloud.

Doing so would incur a small fee (possibly monthly or annually) that can be passed on to the client but would free up spaces for the MSP to be able to use for other clients.

Alternatively, as mentioned in other posts, it would be even more ideal if it were possible to download encrypted copies of published models and then worry about taking care of the backups ourselves or even give them to the client for safe keeping (some clients may even insist).

We definitely believe that there is demand for "insurance scanning" so we'd be very grateful if you would please consider building this functionality into your system as soon as possible.

Cheers,

Stuart

  • The idea for the insurance is great, for the archive i have the same demand from a Museum that want to document their exhibitions and have it in Archive somehow. I think other client would ask the same, like government property, i hope MSP will come back with a solution.

  • Hi @atemporale,

We certainly see archiving scans as a growing need and with these great suggestions the product team can work on a solution that will try to meat everyone's needs.

I just wanted to point out one thing. As you mentioned, one option is to backup the models from Capture using either iTunes or iExplorer. While you can't back up individual models, but only everything in Capture at once, if properly labeled and archived, it would be possible to quickly find a clients model from years back. All that is correct, but if you do need to re-upload a model from Capture, let's say a couple years after the original has been deleted from your account, there is no additional processing fee since it would still be considered a re-upload.

So, until we do figure out a better solution that allows you to archive models from Capture, backing up Capture to have a model re-uploaded years later is something you can do, without incurring any additional processing fees in the future.

I hope that helps, at least for now :)

  • When you say, "a detailed procedure of the back up solution" do you mean how to back up in iTunes or iExplorer? Or, are you looking for more than that? I'm happy to help any way I can.

  • Hi there @Matterport-Amir Please will you clarify what you mean by "While you can't back up individual models, but only everything in Capture at once...." . This is not my experience as I backed up individual models using iExplore.

  • Hi @simonmodera,

While you can copy any number of folders within the "Jobs" folder using iExplorer, the only way to restore back into Capture is by also backing up the DB files. You need both the DB files and Jobs folder content for a proper backup.

So, you don't have to copy all the models from Capture, but the DB files will reference everything in Capture and can't be split from the models.

    I hopes that helps clarify.

  • I know this is a topic from two years ago, but since not much has changed in regards to a  backup solution, I think the best solution would be to integrate cloud backups with services like Box, DropBox, and my favorite, NextCloud. Considering how precious the scan data is, I'm rather surprised that it can be so easily lost.
