Start Location Image vs Start Location

Currently the Start Location is not only where the tour will begin but it is also the static image on the Model as seen here. I would like to be able to use this image as it is a great shot of the home however, I want the tour to being at the front door -as it would if I was actually walking into the home. Starting in the kitchen as it does with this example isn't logical. Again, I want my tour to mimic someone walking through the house and clearly that starts at the front door. Clearly the image from the front door isn't nearly as attractive as the kitchen. Thoughts?

  • Hi @philgorski, great question, and something we've been thinking about a lot. Our main concern is that this could make the interface/experience a little confusing. The thinking is (and please weigh in here), if the person clicks into the Space and they land somewhere unfamiliar, then it's kind of a jarring experience. E.g. "I clicked on the kitchen, why did they drop me at the front door?"

...That said, maybe we're wrong about that. In this community's experience, do you think that users would understand/be OK with that shift, or would it be confusing, or is there some third option we should consider?

Would love all the feedback we can get!!

  • I understand your thinking but I believe that might be over-thinking it. I smile because that thought the way it currently works is totally logical and I can see how from a programers point of view, they'd arrive at that conclusion however, from a marketing/sales perspective, I'll provide my 2 cents. The image I want to display is the most attractive photo I can come up with as to show off the beauty of a space. . Others my feel differently but my thinking is - I'm creating a virtual tour of a space - providing the same as it would be when I walk in from the street - a real life experience. That being said, Everyone walking through a home starts at the same place - the front door as opposed to magically beamed into the kitchen, living room ect. Love to get others thoughts on this too. Maybe just make it a option much like you do with Highlighted tour modes.

  • Any new information in this? I would love to have my thumbnail image be a exterior snapshot from a 360 but when loaded to tour the home, start inside. I somehow managed to do it on this model but i'm not sure how I did it! https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=oHWVt7koTnL&brand=0

  • Has anyone figured out how to do this yet?

  • Hi All,

There is a solution for this and the process is pretty easy :)

Start by doing everything you're doing now to set the start location. You'll also need to capture a Snapshot of the image you'd like to use as the thumbnail for your Space. This will be used as the background before/during loading as well as the thumbnail for your Space when sharing on Facebook.

Once you're done getting the necessary Snapshots, publish your changes in Workshop and close the Workshop app. You've probably seen the thumbnails of each Snapshot at the bottom of the Space page before and you may already know you can quickly select those you want to download and request to have them zipped so you don't have to download them one at a time. What you can also do is click on any Snapshot thumbnail you want to launch a lightbox with a larger view. In the lightbox, near the top right corner, you'll see a button that says, "Make this the thumbnail image." Click that button to set that Snapshot as the Space's thumbnail, while maintaining the previously set start location.

    I hope that helps.

  • I would like to be able to do this also, starting from the walk in of the front door is most logical to our purposes. I also think that its a little vague when you click into some models as where you are going to end up, I see the programming point, but someone coming to look at a model isn't going to be put off by starting at the front door in my opinion.

You can set the starting location from any point within your 3D model or from any perspective in a 360 view. You can also set the dollhouse from any perspective or even the floorplan.

If you want to start your model from the front door:

    1. Open your model in Workspace
    2. Click the View drop down and choose Inside
    3. Move to the scan position near the front door
    4. Use the mouse to move the perspective you want as your starting viewpoint - drag a little to the left, right, up, or down and find the viewpoint that looks the best
    5. Under Assets on the left, and under 3D Showcase controls, click Start Location
    6. Click Update Start Location
    7. Save your model

Your model will now start in that location.

You may also want to set a different thumbnail image - the image that appears behind the "Play" button when you first launch your model. This is a great feature that allows you to feature something about the property - a nice fireplace, a fantastic kitchen, a beautiful front door. The process for that is listed earlier in this thread.

  • What I do is set a snapshot of the exterior overview of the home (a 360 view) but have the start location on inside in a 3D. Works great but it seems to mess with the VR tour start location as well (see my other thread). Here is an example https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=M4f8Eu779cf&brand=0

  • The "Make this the thumbnail image" option appears to have gone missing? Now how do we modify the thumbnail? The default image is often not very attractive.

  • They changed the name, but the feature is there.

Log into your Matterport cloud and find your model. Before going into Workshop, select the image you want to use as the thumbnail from the list below the model window. Click it once, then click "Make this the Start Position". Click the X in the image window.

If you don't see the "Make this the Start Position" option on your photos, you may be a View Only collaborator. If you are an editor or admin, you could clear your browser cache and try again. If you still don't see it, you may want to contact Support.

  • Thanks for the reply. The thumbnail I want to use is already selected as the "start" position so that option is ghosted out. I'm the admin and also cleared cache, to no avail. I contacted MP support so we'll see.

  • I'm with you - there is not an option for "Make this the Thumbnail image" Was there ever?

  • You've stumped me! Can you send a public link to the model? I'm really curious to see what's going on.

  • @philgorski, if you scroll up on this thread, you'll see a screenshot posted with the "Make this the Thumbnail Image" option available. I can confirm this was available in the past. They have recently changed the wording to "Make this the Start Position". That is what I see today when I look at my models in my Matterport cloud.

  • There was, but now it says "Make this the Start Position" instead. I think that's where the confusion stems.

  • You're right, @boone, the button that used to say "Make this the Thumbnail Image" was changed to say "Make this the Start Position" instead. The underlying functionality should still be the same, which is what we're working on and certainly what's made this so confusing.

  • That's the problem. By following the steps as described above...

"Before going into Workshop, select the image you want to use as the thumbnail from the list below the model window. Click it once, then click "Make this the Start Position". Click the X in the image window"

If does just that - the thumbnail is now that picture and so is the start position. So... I'm back where I was when I first posted this question on July 6th of last year.

Missing is the function - that also was descrribed above by Amir on Jan 20th: Make thi sthe thumbnail image.

"click on any Snapshot thumbnail you want to launch a lightbox with a larger view. In the lightbox, near the top right corner, you'll see a button that says, "Make this the thumbnail image." Click that button to set that Snapshot as the Space's thumbnail, while maintaining the previously set start location"

Still looking for a solution :)

  • MP support responded and basically said the same thing chrisandkarenmang posted above - update start position - only this time it worked for me. I have no idea why it did not work before but probably operator error (me). Thanks for the help everyone.

  • I have the same problem:

    1. The Background Image (ie Thumbnail) for the loading screen is not separate from the START LOCATION on the tour. If you set a Snapshot in the SET AS START LOCATION dialogue box then when the tour loads you are brought to that location.

If the HIGHLIGHT REEL is the timeline (ie. Progression or steps) of the GUIDED TOUR  the we would want the First Image to be the START LOCATION of our Tour.

I believe the START LOCATION and THUMBNAIL should be separate things.

The biggest challenge is including the exteriors in a simple way at the start of a tour without losing the Wow factor of the 3D interior. If we could have easy 3D exterior scans of a property then it would be perfect.

Outside Thumbnail (What the client want to see)

Outside Start location (Curb appeal - First impression of Property)

Wow factor of 3D model (New technology put the client ahead of the competition)

Clients can explore the property (Amazing way to feel like you are in the property)

  • Why was this option removed? I had scans that were set up in this fashion and now I don't have that option and my models were set to start with the image not the scan now.
