17500sqft Mega-Mansion bid won.

I didn't think I would need the community feedback so soon into my new venture. We have won the opportunity to scan a mega mansion with 17k+ sqft and a 22 car garage. After speaking to MP support, the plan is to try and fit the entire space into 200 scans. After 200 scans, save and continue with another 50 scans to tighten up the model. Try and upload the 250 scan, if unsuccessful, upload the 200 scan. Is there any other thoughts or advice to help with this undertaking? Thanks in advance for your time.

  • I did I house that was 13,000. Here is that model. It was about 250 scans. This was an empty house, so a furnished one will be more.

Have you ever done a house of this size?

Is there an outdoor space you plan on scanning, I am not talking 360's? It takes practice and planning. I would do that absolutely last. The garage would be second to last. Is it filled with cars? If so, make sure you can walk down the wall to get the fewest scans possible.

You should make a copy when you reach about 200-225. The little dot that is usually green will turn yellow, then of course red. I think that means that you are getting out of range of the support for the model.

Try and plan your scan route to get the fewest scans but get a complete tour.

I have done several houses near this size, so if you have more questions, ask them. There are others that probably have more experience and hopefully they will help out as well.

    Good luck!

  • Hey Justin, thanks for your input and advice. No I have not attempted a scan this size. I have a walk through with the agents on Monday so I will have a better idea of the furnishing and cars. The garage is pretty much a must for the model.. so I will have to find a way. I am hoping to set up access to allow multiple visits.. I have a feeling this is going to take a few. http://www.realtor.com/news/unique-homes/car-collector-garage-lake-arrowhead

  • I just glanced at the link but this house is bigger than 17,000 sqft. I was looking at the garage, it mentioned that it is an additional 8,000 sqft. You have probably about 26,000 sqft. I hope you figured this into your winning bid.

No way you get this done under 200 scans. I would bet more like 400. No big deal, just pointing out the obvious.

I apologize but I did not have time to watch the video. Is there a staircase going from garage to house? I bet it is an elevator and I am not sure how to overcome this except for mattertags. I absolutely hate them for this purpose but sometimes you have to get it finished any way you can. The garage should be pretty straight forward and you could do it with cars inside.

Take your camera on the walk through and try to prop the elevator door open on garage floor. Start the camera facing the back wall of elevator. Then go upstairs and open door the same way from downstairs. Scan again starting with the camera towards the back. Try and walk out on second floor(1st really). That way if that is the only way, you can tell them "hey I need stairs or I have to use mattertags". Please let us know if this solution works!

I would tell them it will take at least two days but you should be able to get it in one long day. The only reason not to finish is if you are doing outside scans and the sun isn't right or it is dark.

Are you doing a floor plan? That makes you have to scan more so the rooms are drawn correctly. They will contact you and tell you that it is above 10,000 and they have to charge you per 10,000 sqft. I know this from experience!

  • Awesome news. I was able to scan a 16000sqft in Hawaii and I was able to fit all the scans in one model it was over 240 scan and it loads fast too. I was able to save scans in the rooms or in the bathrooms where you don't need to cover very sqft.It took me two days of scanning to match the same light during the day. I will highly recommend to start early in the day and plan your scans before you start scanning. Hope everything will go well with you.

  • Thank's everyone for the input.. this was a bit out of the ordinary for me. I managed to get the 3 floors in 161 scans taking ~8 hours over two afternoons. I was told there are stairs to the lower level garage, but since I have seen every sqft of this place, I don't think they understood the question. The only way I see, is the elevator or walk around outside. I could mattertag the elevators and start a new scan I suppose. This is still a draft copy, and will add to the scan if possible and if needed. I appreciate any feedback or ideas to make this scan better.. I have one last visit on Saturday for the garage and any revisions you suggest. Thanks again for your time.. this is big for me locally.

  • This is a fantastic start. That is an amazing home, and your scan was pretty clean.

Are those closets underneath the two sets of stairs near the front of the home, or is one of them a stairway down to the garage?

    • Get some outdoor shots. Got to see that deck!
    • Add scans by the windows overlooking the lake. The view is a big selling point.
    • Nice selfie from the kitchen (see attached picture)
    • Did you miss the back stairway? Can't get up or down that way.
    • The more scans you have, the cleaner the transition from location to location will be. You can always hide extra scans. Having one scan in a room precludes the viewer from getting a different perspective from another scan location. Another benefit to more scans is a more accurate floor plan (if you decide to use that feature).

  • That is a nice house. I like it because it is big but not over the top like the example tour i posted.

Did you try and scan outside to get the views? I would open the doors in master on floor two and walk outside to see the views.

  • Thanks chrisandkarenmang .. I appreciate your time

    • I was in such a hurry I forgot to add the 360's to the showcase.. they are there now.
    • I will add more scans of the windows if I can't make it to the garage and have spare.
    • Oh whoa.. haha that was not an intentional selfie :) I will retake that tomorrow.. thanks for seeing that.
    • I have walked all three staircases and am able.. please let me know where you are having an issue and I can take an extra scan to alleviate any confusion.
    • Gotcha.. hadn't thought about the smoothness of transitions.. thanks for that awesome little tip. I should have some extra scans I can tighten up between scans. All depends on garage. I might even talk to them about not including the garage so I can finish up a solid floor plan. I opened up one of the closets and it was a network closet.. but the agents will be there tomorrow and I will find out if stairs down are available.

  • Thanks Justin.. I forgot to add the 360's to the draft.. they are there now. I have not opened doors to scan outside before.. this would be a awesome addition. Sounds like I need to research how to.. :)

  • How does the elevator work? Is it like the normal one in homes that you close the door or an industrial one that opens and closes on its own? If the first, you should be able to use it to get into garage.

You can research all you want about going outside but you are not going to find much about it. It is pushing the limits but I normally don't have any problems. Just open door up and do a few scans walking to door and outside. You cannot do it at noon but when there is shade or at dusk. Just don't forget to remove your window marking!

You said in one comment you might have extra scans? You can use many more than you have. I have went over 300 but many people have taken more than 400.

  • Amazing 360s!

Let me clarify about the stairway in question. I can get to the landing, and if I click on the stairs going up, it goes back to Floor 1. If I click on the wall, it goes to Floor 2. That's sort of counterintuitive because, as a viewer, I would expect to be clicking on the floor (or in this case, the stairs) to move around.

I've attached another screenshot of the stairs. Wouldn't it be smoother to have scan about halfway up the stairs to allow the viewer to smoothly "walk up" the stairway?

  • It is a commercial elevator.. full out real deal.
I am going to open up a door and retaking some scans.. we have good shade in the afternoon so I might be able to pull it out onto the deck. Worth a shot.
When I say extra.. I mean up to 200. I speak from no experience, but sounds like an unknown science when it comes to the size limit, resulting in "if it works it works" type of feeling. When I mentioned to MP support about the 300-400+ scans I was reading about, he said due to recent changes and additional features, the 250+ model would more than likely break during processing. That is why he recommended I copy at 200 and proceed up to 250 if needed. Seems I should be good to push the scans and get a tighter model.. I will let you know how it works out. Thanks :)

  • Model updated. I have gone down to the garage and also out to the deck. They do not want me going up past the boat in the garage.. it's a mess back there. I thought it was getting too dark and didn't try and push past the 200 scans (yet). So the garage is only partial. There is another bathroom down there I need to scan.. so another visit for sure. I added mattertags to show where you can go downstairs and also to walk out to the deck. This is the way to do this right? I have to redo the 360's because they put the cover on the boat dock.

  • That is fine to point them in the right direction with the mattertag. I didn't roam all around the house because it is too big but I did notice in kitchen that it needs more scans. Try and make it so you can see the scan. For instance, around the island, put a scan around the 4 corners and another in middle of each side. You want someone to be able to see next scan and the way it is now, it pulls you through things. It works but you have to remember some people are too dumb to figure it out!

The one door I went out had a standard problem scanning outside. You click on the mattertag point and look out door. The scan isn't a full circle. Use two trim lines on each side of door facing each other and it will fix the issue. I included a picture to show you what I am talking about. Sorry I had to take a picture with my phone!

  • I tried this.. it took out my scans outside. I checked in the workshop, the scans are still there. You just can't access them while inside.

  • I put the trim lines as you have them shown. But I just noticed you say facing each other. Should I flip them to point at each other?

  • Two reasons it could be....

You have the door marked as window from before and didn't remove it

    Or

You have to use the trim tool to remove mesh from door. Point the arrows toward each other along the door. Use them close together and upload again.

Make a copy of model before and use copy to do it. I attached pictures to show you. This is common when going out.

  • Thank you @justincolbyvaughn and everyone for the tips and help. There are still a couple things I would have done differently, but overall happy with the result. Total scans, 223 after adding the garage and most of the main deck. I probably could have pushed it and tightened up the model now that I look back.. I will be adding labels and mattertags as the customer requests, but this should be the final model. Thanks again for everyone's help getting though this. Pretty awesome knowing there is community out there willing to assist newbies such as myself.

  • @mobilevr2u

No problem and thanks for coming back to say thank you and everything worked out. I try to answer and help anyone that ask but most of the time they don't come back to let you know how it turned out.

The funny thing about this problem is it is very common to me because I scan outdoors instead of 360's. I had actually helped out a local guy yesterday morning with this issue and the pictures I sent you were the exact ones I texted him while talking him through it. I was going down interstate when I saw the email notification and attached it to this thread.

Next time you land a big house like this, you will be ready for an problems that arise on location or in workshop. I actually hate big houses like that but I keep getting them! I prefer regular houses that I can be in and out in a couple of hours. I feel more comfortable showing normal houses as examples because most realtors will never have a listing like this and think Matterport is reserved for mansions. That is just my two cents but I still take them on when they call!

  • @justincolbyvaughn I can't even imagine the mentality of someone that would do that.. come in and not even say thank you for the help.. bad form. I look forward to helping just as you have, and I do appreciate every second of your time.
Indeed a good learning experience, as this is one reason I purchased the camera, large lake homes up where I live. I see your point though, realtors can be misguided thinking this only works for large houses, and we do not want to perpetuate that. I will keep that in mind.
I am also going to start thinking more "if I can scan outside" I will. I can now see this model having at least one scan outside the front door.. allowing someone to "walk in" from outside. You have definitely opened my eyes to what is possible outside the "supported" functions.
Running into an issue.. do you have a tip on breaking down the pre-set boxes for labeling? I am not able to separate the great room with the game room on floor 2. It only shows one big box.

  • I apologize but I use very few features outside of capture app. In fact, the only other thing I do is hide extra scans. I build out single property websites with custom urls. I use something called WP3D and the developer is awesome and his name is Ross. That is the best couple of hundred dollars spent. You can find info Here.

With this option, you can insert your own photos, videos, floor plans, etc.

Are you doing a floor plan for this house? I would because the realtor will be impressed and they will email you and tell you it will cost twice as much but what is $30 for a happy realtor. You have good Photoshop skills, right? You will need them with a house that big because they name rooms crazy!

  • Ok no worries. I do want floorplans, I have asked the listing agents if they are interested and offered to split the price with them. If they decline, I will still purchase and give it to them ha. I wanted to get the rooms labeled for this reason. I thought the labels were used and included in the purchased floor plan? I suppose this is all based on assumption. (edit.. do you think I will have an issue getting plans done? I am nervous the scan is not complete enough)
I have been looking for EXACTLY what you linked!.. I was wondering how that was done. Sweet!! Can't wait to check it out.

  • I didn't see you asked a question earlier.

I think your model would be okay. You did scan every room? It did look like you did a scan or two in some rooms. I don't scan every closet, pantry, etc. But I do try and get the entire room for doll house. I scan the garage just for the floor plan but I delete it off. They walk the tour as they are drawing floor plans, so they will see a door and make a guess. The funny thing is I used the room labels and my floor plan came back nothing like the room labels. I would submit it because it will take a day or two for them to let you know that the model is over 10,000sqft and there is an extra charge.
