Betas in Matterport

Matterport offers betas as a preview of new features for our most passionate users. These features are currently in development and are not fully supported.

We encourage you to try it and tell us how you feel, but please do not use betas for critical, sensitive, or client work. Use backup iOS devices if possible.

For beta support, contact capture-beta@matterport.com.

Current Beta - Capture 4.0.5 (iOS)

Beta release date: 4.0.5 is currently available through the regular App Store. See below for what's in 4.0.5.

Want to try the latest version of Matterport Capture to experience the newest features and fixes? Install the Capture beta using our public Test Flight program. Here's how:

  1. On your iOS device, open the Safari web browser
    • It's important to only use Safari, as the simple act of doing so eliminates the need for Test Flight access codes.
  2. In the URL bar, enter: https://testflight.apple.com/join/htfXQ8jV
  3. Follow the instructions on the page to install Test Flight.
    • If you are asked for an access code, make sure you've opened the link on the Safari web browser on your phone or tablet.
  4. Open Test Flight
  5. Tap Install to get the latest beta release

If prompted, we recommend allowing Test Flight to send you notifications every time new beta builds become available. In the latest version of Test Flight, we recommend accepting the offer to auto-install updates to the beta program to ensure that you have the most stable build.

Return to a Production Version of Capture

When the beta period is over (or if you want to return to a normal production version of Matterport Capture) open the App Store and search for Matterport Capture and install it.

The App Store listing will appear as if you do NOT have it installed, but it will install over the Test Flight version. You will not receive app store updates to Capture while a Test Flight version is installed.

What’s new in version 4.0.5?

This is a bug-fix and stability-focused release, however, it does offer two minor feature related changes (below).

  • Fixes for crashes
    • We’ve fixed several sources of crashes
    • We’ll keep chipping away here with additional updates
  • Repair Tool improvements
    • We’ve improved the Repair a Job option (in Capture>Settings>Help & Support) to cover more scenarios that involve issues with the minimap (the 2D bird’s eye view of your scans).
    • If you find a particular job will not open, crashes on opening, or crashes when trying to add scans to it, select that job with the Repair tool.
  • Update: Matterport for iPhone (Smartphone) Complete Scans
    • For iOS devices that have ultrawide field of view cameras (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPad Pro (2020) models, the Complete Scan approach now only includes two rotations. Previously this required three rotations, which was overkill given the ultrawide field of view camera.
    • We’re still working on adding Lidar support - this will come in Capture 4.1
  • New (in development): Export a Scan Job
    • This is ‘alpha’ and still in development
    • Within Capture>Settings>Help & Support> Export Jobs, you can now select a specific scan job and export it to another location.
    • This location can be anything supported by iOS. For instance, you can AirDrop it to another computer, attach to email (if not too big), upload to Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
      betaimage.png
    • This will make it easier to backup or remove to make more room on your iOS device. If you are working with Matterport Customer Support and need to send scan data to us, this should make it much easier than having to completely rely on iExplorer or iAmazing. (They are still very helpful)
  • Important:
    • If the project or job that you are exporting is a duplicate of another, to get a complete set of data you must also export the original.
    • Why? When you duplicate a scan project on your iOS device we point back to the original job for common scan data so as not to fill up storage on your device.
    • The exported folder(s) will have a long alphanumeric name. We recommend placing this in a folder with a friendly name. If you alter the name of the job folder and delete part of the UUID (unique identifier), it will not reimport properly in the future.
  • Not implemented yet:
    • We do not automatically trace and copy parent/grandparent data to make a duplicate job ‘whole’ in the export. This is in work.
    • Assistance with importing prior exports is in a future update
    • Downloading prior models from the Matterport Cloud directly within Capture is slated for a future release (“Cloud Restore”).

Known Issues in 4.0.5 Beta:

  • Crashes, alignment issues:
    • There are still scenarios that can trigger a crash
    • You may still see "failed to create SWL" or "failed to align" on the first scan
    • We're still working on scenarios that can lead to a cascade of failed to align messages when there is not clear reason for them.
  • Leica BLK360
    • Taking high density and/or HDR4 or HDR5 scans with iOS devices with only 3GB of RAM may lead to the “Unable to Complete Scan” error message. For the highest density/HDR scans we’d recommend an iOS device with 4GB of RAM or higher.
    • We’ve noticed the reported battery state of charge can fluctuate more than expected and are investigating.
    • There may still be instances where the BLK360 is not responding to commands; usually acknowledging the warning and re-trying the scan works. Worst case, turning the BLK360 off and on again resolves the issue.
  • Insta360 ONE R:
    • There may be instances where the ONE R freezes or is not responding to Capture commands. Restart the ONE R and if needed close and re-open Capture.
    • Update: the current production firmware (v.1.2.18) does support Matterport Capture. Prior production versions (1.2.16, 1.2.17 do not).
    • If you had the prior beta firmware installed (v.7.1.45) you will need to manually change to v.1.2.18. The ONE app will not automatically update from the beta because it is a higher version number. Go to insta360.com/download/insta360-oner, download the firmware file, and copy it to the root directory of your ONE R’s SD Card. Turn the ONE R off and on again to trigger the firmware update process.
  • Insta360 ONE X:
    • There may be instances where you experience an ‘error -1005’. Just retry - we’re working to eliminate this incident. Switching to modes and taking a shot may clear this (3D/360 View)
    • The “Enterprise Edition” of this camera includes on-camera image stitching. Matterport Capture has not been updated yet to request this and will still do hemisphere stitching and HDR on the iOS device, not the camera.
  • NEW: Insta360 ONE X2:
    • This new model has just been released and works with Capture using firmware v.1.0.0 and higher. Image quality tuning is not yet complete.
  • Ricoh Theta SC2:
    • This camera may appear to work with Capture but it is not yet fully supported. Thus you are likely to experience intermittent errors.
  • Matterport for iPhone/iPad:
    • iOS devices with only 2GB of RAM are more prone to crash, especially with Complete scans (versus Simple).
  • Large job crashes:
    • In some cases Capture crashes with very large scan jobs (hundreds of scans) - this issue still exists from Capture 4.0.2 and we are using the improvements in crash analytics in this beta to try to trace root cause(s).
