Matterport/Leica Announcement FAQ

We’re pleased to announce a partnership between Matterport and Leica Geosystems. The Leica BLK360 laser scanner will soon be able to connect with the Matterport platform to create a complete reality capture solution.

This means that Matterport customers, especially those in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries, who have either a Matterport Pro or Pro2 3D Camera or a Leica BLK360 will be able to use either device to create a 3D model on the Matterport media platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will this be ready?

We’ve just begun the development work needed to integrate these two products. We plan to release a production-ready system to customers in 2018.

Who will this affect?

Architects, engineers, and construction professionals who require high 3D accuracy in their 3D models, but who also want the benefits of the Matterport Cloud platform will greatly benefit from this integration.

Other Matterport customers who mainly rely on the 360 degree visual panorama imagery such as the real estate, travel/hospitality, and photography sectors will not be affected, as the Leica BLK360 is primarily intended for industries such as construction, facilities management, commercial real estate, and manufacturing.

What’s the difference between the Leica BLK360 and the Matterport Pro2 camera?

The Matterport Pro2 3D Camera is best suited for indoor areas when you need high quality 2D visuals and the 3D accuracy is less critical. In addition, the Pro2 is very quick — one scan only takes 30 seconds.

The Leica BLK360 is best suited for areas where you need very accurate 3D data for later use in measurements and construction planning. In addition, the Leica BLK360 has a long range between scan positions and works well outdoors.

For example, consider a large empty factory. Use the Leica BLK360 in the middle of the factory floor where there is nothing (no 3D objects). You can also use it to capture the building’s exterior. Switch to the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera when you are scanning server rooms, management offices, hallways, and other compact and condensed spaces.

When used together, you can capture anything and capture it fast.

How will it work?

Users will take their iPad with the Matterport Capture app on-site with either the Leica BLK360 or the Matterport Pro2 3D CameraYou can use either camera, or a combination of both, to create a 3D model in the Matterport Capture app. Just switch to each camera’s WiFi network when you want a different type of capture.

Uploading, processing, hosting, editing, and presentation will be done with the Matterport platform. This includes Matterport Cloud ( for hosting and management, Matterport Workshop for editing, and Matterport 3D Showcase for presentation.

Exact details on how the integration will work will come in the future.

Where can I buy a BLK360?

Will this integration work with the Matterport Pro camera too?

Yes, this integration will work regardless of whether you use a Matterport Pro 3D Camera (first generation, released in 2014) or the Matterport Pro2 3D Camera (second generation, released in 2017).

Can I capture exteriors with the BLK360 and interiors with the Pro2 in the same model?

Yes, that is a perfect example of how the two cameras can be combined with each playing to its strengths.

Will I be able to export points clouds for use in my BIM and CAD application?

Yes, you'll continue to be able to export point clouds for use in third party applications.
